A Scandinavian baby trend, the baby box, will be gifted (FREE) to each new mother that takes a childbirth preparation class or delivers their baby at Ashland Birth Center. The Baby Box is intended to give local babies their best start in life and to make the transition easier for parents in the community.

The Finnish government has been providing new moms-to-be with a box before they give birth. The box contains clothes, sheets, handbooks, and toys. The box also has a mattress at the bottom so it can be used as a baby’s cot.

During the decades after the introduction of baby boxes in Finland, infant mortality rates plummeted from 70 in every 1,000 to three in every 1,000. Not only were sleep-related deaths nearly eradicated, breastfeeding rates beyond six months of age doubled.

The firm mattress and an empty sleeping area keeps baby safe and comfortable. It is also easily portable so baby can sleep right next to the bed near mom and dad, without the risk of SIDS from co sleeping.

The American Academy of Pediatrics outlines safe sleep as:

  • In the same room as the parents, but not in the same bed.
  • Soft objects and loose bedding should not be allowed in the crib. This includes pillows, bumper pads, blankets and toys.
  • Always use a firm, flat surface with baby sleeping on his or her back.
  • Breastfeeding is recommended and is associated with a reduced risk of SIDS.

These baby boxes are being given away for FREE for anyone who takes a childbirth preparation class or delivers their baby at Ashland Birth Center. Educating the community and providing the safest products for growing families is incredibly important to us.
